Teaching and Learning at Appin Park
“Teaching and learning at our school is about more than lessons -
it’s about inspiring brave, kind, and curious learners.”

Literacy
At Appin Park, Literacy is at the heart of learning from Foundation to Year 6. Our approach balances explicit instruction with rich, purposeful experiences that nurture a love of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, we provide a two-year alternating scope and sequence so students encounter a wide variety of texts and skills across multi-age levels.
Students build strong foundations in phonics, spelling, grammar, and handwriting, while also developing comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking through high-quality literature and text-based units. Writing is taught across a range of genres, with regular opportunities for creativity, including initiatives such as Appin Authors Friday.
Above all, our Literacy program is designed to ensure every student experiences success, grows in confidence, and develops a lifelong love of reading and writing.
Numeracy
Numeracy at Appin Park develops confident, flexible, and creative mathematical thinkers.
We focus on building strong number knowledge,
problem-solving skills, and real-world applications.
Students explore concepts through hands-on activities, games, and digital tools, while also practising fluency and accuracy.
Our approach encourages curiosity, persistence, and a positive attitude towards maths. We also celebrate maths beyond the classroom through events and challenges that showcase teamwork and a love of learning.

Physical Education
Physical Education at Appin Park develops confident, active, and healthy students. From Foundation to Year 6, students participate in a variety of movement experiences that build fitness, coordination, teamwork, and sports skills.
Our program includes Jump Rope for Heart, cross country, school athletics, and interschool sport, giving students opportunities to challenge themselves and celebrate their achievements.
Lessons combine fundamental movement skills, games, athletics, and recreational activities, encouraging goal-setting, resilience, and a lifelong love of being active.
STEM
STEM at Appin Park inspires curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Students engage in hands-on learning using tools and programs such as Bee-Bots, Lego Spike Education, and Makers Empire, developing skills in coding, design, and innovation.
We also take part in challenges like the Makers Empire STEM Challenge, encouraging collaboration and real-world thinking.
Our approach allows students to explore ideas, test solutions, and see the impact of their learning in a fun and meaningful way.

Visual Arts
Visual Arts at Appin Park gives students the chance to explore materials, techniques, and ideas in a hands-on way.
Lessons develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media, including projects like self-portraits. Students learn to express their ideas, work collaboratively, and take pride in their creations.
Library
Students spend one hour each week in the Library, exploring books, digital resources, and activities that inspire a love of reading and learning. It’s a place to relax, discover new ideas, and share stories with friends.

Italian
Italian classes give students the chance to learn a new language and explore Italian culture from Foundation to Year 6. Lessons focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with activities designed to be interactive, fun, and meaningful. Students engage in songs, games, stories, and cultural projects that help them communicate confidently and develop an appreciation for languages.
